This book tells the story in words and photographs of a Montreal-New York round trip that I undertook in June 2001 by motorcycle.
The purpose of this trip was to photograph Manhattan's famous buildings and some of its well-known streets in the hopes of selling images to the image bank Masterfile. During my trip, I had no idea that three months later, the world of New Yorkers would change forever. Indeed, on September 11, 2001, two hijacked airliners destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. On my arrival on June 5, 2001, I was a bit scared, but little by little, New York revealed its gentleness and diversity to me.
When I see what is happening in the United States of America in 2025, it is with a sense of sadness and anguish that I look back at my photos from 2001 On September 11, 2001, in the immediate aftermath of the destruction of the Twin Towers, New Yorkers quickly rallied and people from all over the world sympathized with the United States. Since the destruction of the Twin Towers, the United States is experiencing another form of destruction.
Traveling by motorcycle in June 2001, I felt free. In 2025, freedom seems like a word from another era. The aftermath of the destruction of the Twin Towers highlighted the resilience and compassion of New Yorkers. These years, compassion and caring for others has taken its toll.
On September 11, 2001, when I saw the two planes destroying the Twin Towers on television, I immediately thought of the people I had met on the plaza outside of the World Trade Centre on the morning of June 9, 2001. I had a special thought for the hot dog vendor who served me with a big smile "Two dogs with mustard and relish."
